Things to do in Copperas Cove

The citizens of Copperas Cove are proud of their heritage. From the early beginnings as a western settlement, the city has grown into a vibrant family-oriented community maintaining an atmosphere of friendliness and cooperation.  Known as the “Gateway to the Texas Hill Country”, Copperas Cove’s countryside is dotted with beautiful native flowers and abundant wildlife.

Fort Hood
Located within 20 miles of Copperas Cove you will find Fort Hood which covers 339 square miles of Central Texas. The modern Army post is staffed with the largest collection of soldiers and fighting machines in the free world. It is the only two-division post in the nation. Home of the Army's III Corps, 1st Cavalry and the 4th Infantry Division. The 1st Cavalry Division Museum exhibits more than 150 years of cavalry uniforms, equipment, arms from sabers to assault helicopters; emphasis on division combat during World War II, in Korea, and in Vietnam. Artillery, tanks, trucks and captured foreign weapons. Located at 761st Tank Destroyer Boulevard.

Ogletree Gap Preserve
This preserve is located just off US Highway 190 on the west side of Copperas Cove. Once Ogletree gap was the Marston Ogletree ranch but is now a city park with a full-service pavilion. Ogletree Gap Folklife Festival - The third weekend in October comes to life with the Folklife Festival. Centered on local pioneer life, demonstrations include horseshoeing, spinning, weaving, candle-making,  jerky- making, hoecake- making and meat-corning. The highlight of the festival is a Civil War re-enactment by Alpha Company of the Fightin’ 6th Cavalry. The festival also features storytelling, a barbecue cook-off, pie bake-off and eating contest, folk dancers, gunfighter shootouts, and a beard growing contest.  New to the list of festival attractions is the Giro d’Gap bicycle tour.  The event offers cyclists an opportunity to explore the fringes of the Texas Hill Country and a free afternoon at Ogletree Gap.

Old Downtown Copperas Cove
This is an area, of several city blocks, of historic downtown, which was the center of business activity in Copperas Cove since the coming of the railroad. Many of the original buildings still exist.

Pioneer Cemetery
This cemetery is located just south of US 190 near the terminus of the South Park jogging trail. Serves as the resting place of several of the town's founders.

South Park
This park is located just off of FM 1046 in southwest Copperas Cove. The park houses a swimming pool, volleyball courts, soccer fields and a jogging trail.

The Allin House
This house is located at the intersection of North Main Street and Avenue B and was the home of Copperas Cove's first mayor, Jouett Allin. The home was originally built in 1913 and was recently restored to its original condition.

Topsey Exotic Ranch and Drive Through Safari
This park has more than 50 species, many of which roam free, that visitors can observe and enjoy. Although the animals are wild, most are so gentle that they can be hand fed from the safety and comfort of your car. Located nine miles northwest of town via FM 1113 to intersection of FM 580.
